POSITION SUMMARY:

Over the last few years, conditions for working-class youth and immigrant families have grown worse as a result of the health pandemic, the mounting economic crisis, and the amplification of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, and other forms of hatred throughout the U.S. and in Southern California. Due to gaps in access created by systematic barriers in education, healthcare, and other institutional failures, families continue to experience severe challenges in accessing health and wellness resources. These challenges are even more pronounced in economically-challenged cities, including Pomona.

This position will work to address these challenges through an environmental justice and healing justice scope of work. They will steward the Gente Community Garden and develop strategies for cultivation, harvests, and delivery of crops to improve food access for low-income families in Pomona. They will support the development of new educational programs and food-access projects in coordination with organizers at Gente. The Farmer and Community Organizer will bridge environmental justice into other aspects of Gente Organizada’s work and will utilize the community garden as an instrument to generate social awareness and community change.
