SUBMISSION GUIDELINES

Open Submissions

Submissions for the Gente Cuaderno are always open, which means there are no deadlines for new submissions. We encourage everyone to consider sending in their work when they have the desire, capacity, and motivation to do so, as the feedback process requires additional time and effort for the author and our Cauderno Editors.

Editors meet to review submissions on a weekly basis, so your work will be reviewed in a timely manner. All submissions sent by Saturday at 12pm will be reviewed early on the following week. Please take this into consideration when submitting new work and revised drafts.

Eligibility

Any member of the local Gente Organizada or Pomona community is welcome to submit to the Cuaderno. We encourage individuals of all backgrounds to submit their writing.

Accepted Formats

Submissions may be received in any digital format through the Gente Cuaderno Submission Form. Scans of hand-written work are also accepted.

The Gente Cuaderno currently only accepts written work. Written work including images is accepted.

Language

The Gente Cuaderno accepts submissions written in English and Spanish. Other languages will be reviewed at the Editors’ discretion to ensure accurate, thorough, and helpful feedback. If needed, the Editing Team can outsource translation to aid the feedback process for submissions in other languages.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding how your submissions will be reviewed, please contact gentecuaderno@gmail.com

  • Abuse (physical, sexual, psychological)

  • Violence, death, blood/bleeding, harm to others

AI

The Gente Cuaderno allows the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the brainstorming, grammar-correction, and researching for written work that is submitted for publication. We do not allow the use of AI in the authorship, co-authorship, revision, or review of written work that is submitted for publication. As per the Gente Cuaderno mission, we want to highlight the original work of our community members’ unique voices and perspectives. This is why it encourages authors to refrain from using AI tools in the crafting of their work.

Some acceptable uses of AI:

  • Grammar correction (Grammarly, Docs Spell Check, etc.)

  • Generating writing prompt (e.g. asking Google AI Overview for “creative writing prompts in the fantasy genre”)

  • Research tools (e.g. using Google Gemini in Excel to create graph)

Unacceptable uses of AI:

  • Submitting work generated by AI, even if prompted by user (e.g. asking ChatGPT to “write a fantasy short story with a female heroin and dragons”)

  • Asking AI chatbot to revise/rework draft of written work (e.g. asking ChatGPT to “make this story I wrote better” or “make my article sound more professional”

Any and all use of Artificial Intelligence must be declared in the Gente Cuaderno Submissions Form under the Statement Declaring Use of AI section. Declaring use of AI will not automatically disqualify your submission for publication, however, it may affect how we proceed with providing feedback on your submission. This statement, if submission is accepted for publication, will accompany written work.

Submissions suspected of incorporating AI-generated work will be run through an AI-detecting program by the Editing Team. If AI-generated is detected and the author has not declared it in the Gente Cuaderno Submissions Form, the piece will not be accepted.

AI “Scraping”/“Crawling”

Work published on the Gente Cuaderno site, as is work on most public sites, is subject to AI web scraping/crawling for training purposes. This practice is not carried out by Gente Organizada or The Gente Cuaderno.

If you have any questions or concerns regarding the use of AI in your submission or our guidelines, please contact gentecuaderno@gmail.com

Expectations (by style)

The Gente Cuaderno aims to promote diverse and creative interpretations of writing styles and genres. We also aim to promote learning within our community, including learning about standard formatting for specific styles of writing. Depending on your goals with your submissions, we are here to aid the development of strong and versatile written work for publication and more. While reviewing submissions listed as a specific style of writing, we will adhere to the following guidelines/formats to provide accurate and useful feedback.

  • Content is original to author

Research Reports

  • Follow MLA, APA, Chicago, or other academic format

  • Use credible sources & cite appropriately

  • Length is kept to about 1 page

Review & Feedback

The Gente Cuaderno Editing Team is here to help you get your work ready for publication. After a submission is received, the Editing Team makes a decision on whether the submission is Rejected, Accepted, or Revised and Resubmit. If your work is…

  • Rejected: We are unable to publish your work at this moment. You will receive an email notification of this decision including our reasoning for rejecting your work and notes on your piece.

  • Accepted: We will be publishing your work in our next Upload*. You will receive an email notification of this decision with more information and notes on your piece, which you may elect to ignore or apply.

  • Revise and Resubmit: We will connect you with an Editor from our team for more in-depth feedback and a chance to resubmit. You will receive 1) an email notification of this decision and 2) an email from an assigned Editor including said feedback. You must use the Gente Cuaderno Submissions Form to resubmit the revised work.

*Upload Calendar is available on the Gente Cuaderno page on genteorganizada.org/cuadernosubmissions. There are two Uploads a month on the second and fourth Thursday of each month.

Resubmitting after Revisions

This process is essentially a second, prioritized, submission in which authors get a chance to apply 1-on-1 feedback after collaborating on their piece with a Cuaderno Editor. After the resubmission is received, the Editing Team makes the decision to Reject or Accept your work. Original guidelines for decision apply.

Rejected Work

Authors are encouraged to apply the feedback given in the Rejection email notification and revise their work on their own. If you wish to submit a revised draft of your work, you may do so through the Gente Cuaderno Submission Form.
