In “The Unheard Voices of Pomona-Toibinga,” Chief Tony Cerda, Joshua Andujo, and Joshua Swodeck discuss the resistance of the Gabrielino-Tongva people and their connection to the land, unearthing Pomona's history. Since February 2024, five SEEDS of Pomona DocuSeries fellows have attended a series of workshops where they learned how to conduct research, interview, collect archival material, film and edit to create short-film documentaries. This short dance film is inspired by the critique of US narratives about the ethno-cultural identities of the Mexican Diaspora in the United states, by addressing the misrepresentative narratives we are fed in our US history classes, popular media and how it breeds harmful assimilation tendencies. Where our elders, parents and young people internalize self rejection, erasure and hate in order to fit into a society that shames accents, traditional foods, clothing and appropriates our culture. The hope of this film is to aid in the healing process of our community members by honoring the collective migrant experience of our relatives and ancestors. A sacrifice we would not be here without. To celebrate the diverse identities and dance practices that live on through the diaspora. Highlighting the intergenerational autonomy these communities have through dance, where identities have been generationally passed down or developed by our younger generations seeking their own sense of empowerment and ethnic pride." The Pomona Students Union and Gente Organizada teamed up to create this timely piece on immigration. Using a unique narrative and current event news, our young filmmakers created this short film. Youth leaders from the Pomona Students Union have produced a short film that will highlight the experience of undocumented people in this country. The film features a role reversal, where a Caucasian woman is the undocumented person. Highlighting the day-to-day experiences and real life struggles that many individuals in our communities face. The film touches upon the lack of a real path to citizenship, economic and community impact of undocumented people, and the fear that many of our most vulnerable neighbors are facing in this current political climate. The young leaders hope the film helps educate and inspire individuals to get involved in defending the rights of undocumented people and hope the film helps spark policy change in Pomona to create sanctuary for all residents.
