Canvasser

POSITION: Canvasser (Part-time Temporary)

REPORTS TO: Director of Movement Building & Team Lead

LOCATION: Pomona, CA - in-person

CLASSIFICATION: Non-exempt, Part-Time Temporary (20 hours) (August 17th, 2026 - November 30, 2026)

HOURLY RATE: $28.00 per hour

Gente Organizada (Gente) is a community-led social action non-profit organization based in Pomona whose mission is to organize to build intergenerational power and wellness for youth and immigrant families in Pomona. We use an asset-based approach to community organizing to partner with historically underrepresented immigrant populations to understand their rights and the power of community action. Gente builds upon the deep-rooted, unique cultural strengths that have helped immigrant communities survive for generations and increase capacities for these communities to not just survive but to truly thrive. POSITION SUMMARY:

The Canvasser is a part-time, temporary, in-person role based in Pomona that supports Gente Organizada's community organizing and volunteer recruitment efforts. The ideal candidate has at least one year of experience in voter engagement or customer service, is passionate about working with low-income immigrant families and youth of color, and is comfortable engaging community members through door-to-door canvassing and tabling at events.

 

This role requires strong verbal communication and attention to detail, the ability to work in a fast-paced environment, and comfort with both frontline outreach and administrative tasks such as data entry and reporting. Candidates must be able to work 4–6-hour shifts, 4–5 days a week, including some weekends, and must be based near Pomona with reliable access to a cell phone and data plan. Bilingual English-Spanish skills are a plus. This is physically active work, requiring the ability to walk outside for extended periods and travel by car or public transit in varying weather conditions.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

Community Outreach:

  • Participates in weekly training sessions on community organizing skills in order to move the community to take action on local issues.   

  • Performs door-to-door canvassing primarily

  • Performs community outreach at, events, high-visibility locations, and tabling. 

  • Able to work 4 to 6-hour sessions, usually 4-5 days a week

  • Maintains professional and engaging conversations with the community members and peers & adheres to the script

  • Will document voter contact data and report daily to the lead staff

  • Attends and mobilizes community members to attend campaign events that can include City Council Meetings, Cultural Pop-ups, rallies, and others. 

 

Volunteer Recruitment:

  • Participates in the planning and coordination of civic engagement trainings and student-led voter outreach activities on school campuses, in conjunction with educators and school staff

  • Conducts volunteer recruitment through door-to-door canvassing, phone banking, texting, and community events outreach

  • Carries out professional and engaging conversations with voters and peers

  • Enters voter contact data and pledge forms

  • Supports administrative pieces of campaign work, such as making photocopies, organizing materials, etc., as assigned

Other Duties:

  • Documents student-led activities and narratives for our social media channels, as directed by communications staff

  • Provides support at organizational events as needed

  • Works in good faith to support the overall stability and effectiveness of the organization 

  • Submits any and all required paperwork in a timely and accurate manner

  • Additional duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE: 

  • One year of experience with voter engagement campaigns or customer service preferred

  • Passion for and commitment to working with young people of color, low-income immigrants, and refugees, especially from an intersectional perspective, including LGBTQIA+ communities 

  • Familiarity with grassroots organizing, advocacy and electoral engagement techniques a plus

  • Able to communicate in an outgoing, enthusiastic and persuasive manner 

  • Strong attention to detail

  • Strong time management skills

  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment

  • Strong verbal communication skills

  • Bilingual or multilingual, with English-Spanish skills a plus

  • Must have a working cell phone with a data plan 

  • Based in or near Pomona (within 5 miles)

 

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

  • ​The position is located in Pomona

  • While performing the duties of this position, the employee frequently travels by automobile or public transit, or works outside and is thus exposed to changing weather conditions

  • When working inside an office, this position is not exposed to weather conditions

  • Walks outside 80% of the time, and sits at a desk 20% of the time, which includes typing on a computer and mouse

  • Works on the ground during weekends for canvassing or special events (i.e Rally in front of City Hall)
